Design and Technology ‘Eco club’ news

The D&T department has set up a new club to which will raise pupil’s awareness of the need to reuse and recycle everyday materials. The inspiration for the group has come from the large amount of materials that get scrapped around school each year through breakage, refurbishment and by being just worn out.

The group is going to take these bits of junk and transform them into useful and unusual ‘one off’ pieces of furniture and ‘objects of art.’

The first successful piece has been created by an YR7 student.

Sophie Bull decided she wanted to make a small occasional table. Available material included: broken library chairs of 1970’s design, square with beech wood frames and foam upholstered seat cushions; salvaged teak bench tops from our science laboratory refurbishments in 2007 including chewing gum and graffiti.

Here is the final result:

The club runs every Thursday from 3.30pm to 5.00pm and is always looking for new members from all years. Anyone with an environmental conscious and wanting to create something from nothing, no matter what your skill level is, are very welcome.

The ‘eco club’ has also produced a set of bird boxes to enhance the school environment. These are going to put up around the ‘design pod’ in readiness for the nesting season.  Again these were made from recycled materials, the wood was donated by Williams Saw Mill, Hill Side Martley and the fittings were made from material from Worcester Resource Centre which specialises in selling recycled material which would normally have gone for land fill.

Events over the summer term:

Yr 8 will be having an ‘eco day’ in ‘design and technology’ during July when they will spend time producing interesting products from as range of recycled material. As part of this exercise we are hopefully having a local craftsman/blacksmith, Oliver Marshall to work alongside some of our students to produce an ‘eco sculpture’ from scrap metal donated to and found around the school.

Can you help?

We are constantly looking for materials and volunteers to help us with our ‘eco projects’. For the sculpture to be a success we need more interesting pieces of scrap metal, things like old, worn out gardening implements to pieces of derelict farm and agricultural machinery.

If you have anything that you think we could make use of please contact Mr. Neal or anyone at school in the ‘design pod’ team.

We also need off cuts of wood, metal and plastic which we can use to enhance our curriculum developments.
